Earthmoving (front loader or dump truck) tyres are categorised according to standard, based on the tread pattern design and the height of the tread nails. L3/E3 indicates a standard pattern or nail height with a standard overall pattern depth. This includes traditional wave patterned, dump patterned designs with nails resembling pegs rather than nails. These block patterns are typically designed for abrasive surfaces, for general depot work where there is minimal risk of cutting. They provide poor traction on loose soil, are not good at self-cleaning, and become clogged with clayey mud. They resist wear correctly because they are made in a closed, more coherent pattern than a tractor tyre, for example. The cut resistance of these block patterns is general, the blocks are harder to puncture by sharp stone, metal, glass scrap.
