The new generation of refractometers allows fast, non-destructive measurement of the sugar content of fruit without cutting or squeezing. Infrared measurement over a defined wavelength range is an established test system in many other industrial applications. The measurement can be performed simply by placing the measuring optics on the surface of the fruit. It does not require wiping and cleaning after each measurement as with conventional analogue or digital refractometers. Pre-set calibration and different measuring ranges mean that a separate instrument is required for each type of fruit.
