Description
BMR Dwarf, a new type of silage sorghum hybrid with very good digestibility and no tendency to topple, growing to 2-2.2 m tall.
It is available in unstriped form.
Advantages:
- Outstanding drought tolerance, excellent water management; can use significantly less water (30-50%) than maize, so can out-yield maize by 30-40% in a dry year.
- Exceptional resistance to pests and pathogens. Although the maize weevil has a host plant, the developmental chain of the weevil is broken, i.e. it does not reproduce, making it suitable for solving the problem caused by maize monoculture.
- Its nutrient requirements are not very high (it can use the mineral content of the deeper soil layers).
- It is highly adaptable, tolerating extremes of soil pH, from 5.5 to 8.5, and can survive in saline soils.
- At medium height, it produces a large green mass and a relatively high seed yield.
Optimum for silage production:
- Easy to store and easy to ensile (high sugar content makes it ferment easily).
- When harvested at optimal phenological stage, it provides excellent energy-rich fodder.
- Its yield is close to that of silage maize.
- When harvested in waxy stage, it yields silage with a dry matter content of about 30-35%.
Breeding period:
- Moderately long growing season - 110 days from hatching to harvest, until the beginning of waxing.
- Grows to 2-2.2 m tall, not prone to toppling due to short stems.
- It produces well-developed buds with low tannin.
- The plant has a high sugar content.
- Being a BMR hybrid, it has low lignin content.
