Description
BMR Dwarf, a hybrid silage sorghum with very good digestibility and no tendency to droop, growing to 1.8-2 m tall.
Advantages:
- Outstanding drought tolerance, excellent water management; it can use significantly less water than maize (30-50%), so can out-yield maize by 30-40% in a dry year.
- Although the maize beetle has a host plant, the developmental chain of the beetle is broken, i.e. it does not reproduce, and is therefore suitable to remedy the problem caused by maize monoculture.
- Its nutrient requirements are not very high (it can use the mineral content of the deeper soil layers).
- It is highly adaptable (tolerates extreme soil pH, between 5.5 and 8.5, and thrives in saline soils).
- At medium height, it produces a large green mass and a relatively high seed yield.
Optimum for silage production:
- Easy to store and easy to ensile (high sugar content makes it ferment easily).
- When harvested at optimal phenological stage, it provides excellent energy-rich fodder.
- Its yield is close to that of silage maize.
- When harvested in waxy stage, it yields silage with 30-35% dry matter.
Breeding season:
- Average (late) - 110-120 days from emergence to harvest, until early waxing.
- Grows to 1.8-2 m tall, but is not prone to toppling due to its short stems.
- Produces well-developed bugs with low tannin.
- Being a BMR hybrid, it has a low lignin content.
- On good soil, it has produced 45 t green weight on home farm.
- The untilled form can also be used in organic farming.
